I'm working on a 70' 23 that is covered up for now, but as soon as the temps get back up above freezing,I hope to get back to work. The cabintop looks as though the previous owners attempted to support the mast from inside the cabin. I see a small crack, and have considered laying up a beam to install for mast support. Are the Irwin 23's known for any problems by the mast support/cabin top?
Any advise would be appreciated.

I have a 1970 23(hull #14). Anyway I've been around a few I23's and have not heard or seen any problems with the deck support beam. Though I'm sure if an improperly bedded mast base was installed, rot would likely ensue... The problem with supporting from inside with a vertical support is that you cannot feasibly position support directly under the mast base due to centerboard pendant assembly... I have thought of ways to try and fiberglass in a "real" bulkhead, however have been unable to figure out an easy way to do so. The cabin liner really limits that option and hacking up the liner seems like an awful lot of work.
